I have been mentoring middle school and high school students within the West Delaware Iowa school district now for 3 years with video and multimedia production.
The video team is made up of young professionals ranging from the age of 9-18 doing live multicamera switched shoots requiring camera operators, audio, switcher, CG, recording, director, producer, video engineer, coordination with lighting and house sound, etc. This weekend we had 9 people involved in a 3 camera shoot to fill all the stations.
The video team should be very proud of themselves for doing an outstanding job.
Possible Polycom Video Conferencing Mobile Case
GAEMS G155 case with integrated screen.
I will update this posting in the near future with more details and better pictures. In short, the goal was to make the HDX 6000, 7000, and 8000 Polycom Video Conferencing units more mobile using a GAEMS G155 case with integrated screen and speakers. Cost of the case is around $250 – $290. – http://compuexpert.com/g155/index.html
Some of you are thinking, why not use the Polycom Real Presence software with the Samsung Galaxy, iPad or Motorola Xoom or maybe a computer with desktop video conferencing software? We do use those in our organization already however, we have some projects where we need to use the hardware based equipment like the 6000, 7000 and 8000. The current mobile cases offered for those solutions are too expensive and bulky.
I have included pictures below of the case. You can see that the camera and camera cable would have to go in to a smaller separate case and be connected during a brief setup. Also I will be getting a shorter MIC, Camera and Ethernet cables to fit better in the case when it is closed. There are some other modifications and details that I will need to explain more in the future updates depending on what Polycom System you are wanting to use, IE: 6000, 7000, 8000.
Here is a link to a distributor for the GAEMS G155 case with integrated screen –

He was very helpful and is interested in what the demand may be for this case being used for video conferencing.
We are all staged to start setting up audio and multimedia for the Iowa Board of Regents meeting starting tomorrow.
Working with MyEntre.net at UNI, representatives from Google are here working with businesses showing them how they can use tools from Google to enhance their productivity and online presence.
The event is being streamed live today. http://univnia.na4.acrobat.com/webinar
Here are some recent pictures of the delivery of HDX 7000 Polycom Video Conferencing systems to Walnut Grove Elementary School in Council Bluffs Iowa.
The mobile systems will be used to support point to point and multipoint full screen, full motion video conferencing between sites (depending on bandwidth, will support high definition video). The systems can be rolled in to any classroom and are ready for a video conference with anyone globally via the Internet in about 5 minutes.
For this project we will be delivering additional systems like these to multiple sites in the near future. Two of the additional sites are Lincoln Elementary in Waterloo Iowa and Price Lab School in Cedar Falls Iowa.
The systems at Walnut Grove are being used to support a Literacy project being hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. They will be used to auto record literacy teachers teaching in their classrooms using the Polycom HDX 7000 systems in combination with the RSS 4000 recording system, the RMX 2000 video bridge and the CMA 4000 management and desktop video conferencing solution. Many of these solutions were already deployed and being utilized at UNI, this project is building on resources already available to the UNI community.
Instructors and mentors will dial in to the classrooms in Council Bluffs using the remote camera control capabilities to pan, tilt and zoom the camera in the classroom focusing on the learning and teaching activities while auto recording on the RSS4000 for later review.
The recordings will be used later for examples and review of the lessons. The video conferencing systems will also be utilized for live conferencing after the class to discuss and assess the previous lessons as well as to conference with other peers nationally and possibly internationally in the future. The archived video will be distributed via a combination of ways, the RSS 4000, UNI Streaming Media Solution (http://live.uni.edu), UNI Learning Management System (http://www.uni.edu/elearning) and the Literacy Vimeo.com site (http://www.vimeo.com/unijccl).
This technology could also be used for bringing in guest speakers and to support other learning opportunities. It will be exciting to see other creative ways these solutions will be used by the innovative Iowa teachers in the future!
