One Monitor DOA – Upgrade Is On Hold

I purchased a slightly used 17” monitor and had it shipped to me via Fed Ex.

Yesterday I received the monitor. The box was a little worse for wear but I assumed that the box had been used for other shipping trips. I cut the shipping box open and lifted the monitor out. Great, I thought, now I can upgrade my dual monitor setup on my computer replacing my second smaller 15” monitor with this 17” monitor. I use the second 15” monitor mainly to display all the gauges when I play the Microsoft Flight Simulator game for flying IFR.

As I lifted the monitor out of the box, I could hear rattling. I thought, "This is odd." Turning the monitor over to attach the swivel base, I found the bottom of the monitor was busted. I found the internal board of the monitor was cracked making the monitor unusable. I have some images below.

I have shipped many things via Fed Ex; in fact, it is my shipping company of choice. This is the first time I have experienced a damaged shipment using their service. I am now filling out the damage claim and will see how they handle the issue.

All Down Hill from Here

Ahhh finally, the official arrival of winter making the turn from less sunlight, shorter days to the gradual move to more sunlight, longer days. I am now dreaming of spring,  warm weather, breaking out the bikes and the GPS to go geocaching with the family. BTW, Iowa is a great place to live. I enjoy the change in seasons and can even handle the cold and snow however; the lack of sunlight is what I do not like.

Back to biking and geocaching. If you have a GPS, (I use the Magellan Meridian Color) or want one and have not tried to go geocaching, it is something all GPS owners must do. Go to the official geocaching web site to find out about geocaching or try a search for a geocache near you. I like to find the ones near a bike trail. This allows you to combine biking with the family along with hiding/finding geocaches.  For example, there are some good caches hidden along one of the bike trails in George Wyth State Park that I ride. Take a look at the geocaching site and see if it is something you may be interested in.

For those who are celebrating the holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The World of Dial Up

Saturday night I had the opportunity to experience accessing the Internet via dial up again. It has been about 6 months since the last time I had to use dial up as a replacement to broadband and I am very happy to state that I am back on high-speed access now posting this entry. I am glad that dial up is here to use in a pinch for instant messaging and email, but for almost anything else these days, I want faster access. I continue to wonder what it is going to take price wise for current dial up Internet users, who have the capability to get broadband, to actually purchase broadband and only use dial up in a pinch.

More Ultralight Video Available

More videos are available on the Ultralight Aircraft of Iowa web site. If you are interested in flying, one video is about 7 minutes long and has some video taken from a two seater ultralight in flight. There are other smaller segment videos there too. Jump out there and look. The blue single seat Quicksilver Ultralight that is in one of the videos is on their for sale page.

The Van and Video Conferencing

I have no new news on the van yet. I will be checking in with the dealer on Friday to see if they have found a solution to my ignition problem.

Tonight I have been working on getting a Polycom Via Video II PC based video conferencing unit working from behind my NAT’d network. It seems to be working well now and is ready to be used for a video conference tomorrow morning.

I have been promoting/using several products for PC – IP based video conferencing where I work. There are many levels of video conferencing products available. They range from the high cost/high quality room units to the lower cost/lower quality PC style units. The other aspects to review are proprietary vs. standards based video conferencing solutions. Both areas have their strengths and weaknesses, your decision for a product must be based on what your needs are.

In my organization, for most situations we need interoperability. The PC based video conferencing products I use are the Polycom Via Video II and the VCON Vigo series units. They both come with cameras, specialized software from the vendors and are both H.323 standards compliant. The standardization enables users of one product to connect to users of other products. The strengths of these products that make them better than some of the free products like Netmeeting are their easy to use interfaces, set of different tools and the camera that is included usually offers better quality than some of the lower cost web cam/free software solutions.

Recently, Polycom made a change with their PC based product. Not only are they offering the Via Video II solution with camera included, they have created another product called the Polycom PVX.  This new software will now interoperate with many USB web style cameras eliminating the need for the camera that comes with the Via Video II. The software also offers other features as well. It will be interesting to see how the PVX software holds up to previous products.

The pictures shown below from left to right are the Polycom Via Video II and the VCON Vigo.

Honda Odyssey Ignition Switch Switch In the Near Future

My family and I are proud owners of a Honda Odyssey. The Odyssey is a great van. The van drives and runs good and has a lot of room. This is the first vehicle that I have ever owned, used or new, that I do not have any complaints about…well, until now.

Our family Honda Odyssey hit the 30,000-mile mark in the past few weeks, so today I delivered the van to the Honda dealer in Waterloo for the 30,000-mile checkup. As many of you know, this is the comprehensive check to ensure all is working correctly complete with oil change; various filter replacements and other items on a very long detailed list, which is why it is best to leave tasks like this to the professionals.

When I delivered the van, I told the service rep that we were having an issue with the ignition switch. The Honda Odyssey came with three Keys. Two keys are the master keys that open all the doors, are used to start the van and have the keyless entry remotes located with them. The third key is used if you ever use a valet service. For the record, the third key has never been used  nor could I tell you what is different about it from the other keys. I recollect that it only opens the door and starts the van; however, it cannot open the glove compartment. I guess I will have to try it out sometime.

I explained to the service rep that when the van is shut off and you remove the key from the ignition, 90 percent of the time, the ignition switch fails to sense that the key has been removed. Big deal right? BUZZ.

The van comes with a feature that stops you from locking your keys in the van if you accidentally leave them in the ignition. So… You stop, shut off the van, remove the key, the ignition switch sticks still incorrectly sensing the key is in the ignition, you get out of the van and neither the remote nor manually locking the door works as the safety system kicks in and unlocks the door automatically. It was funny the first five times but…..

The only way to fix it is to gently tap on the ignition switch until you hear a very soft sounding click. Once you hear the click, you can lock the door/set the alarm and go on about your business.

Since the van is under warranty, there is no cost to me to get this fixed. The service rep figured they would replace the ignition switch and set it to work with our keys and all would be fine. Well, what we learned is that if we replaced the ignition switch, we would have to have a key for the door and then another for the ignition. That was fine on my 1978 Pontiac Bonneville I used to own but not on my van, especially when it is still under warranty.

The service rep was supportive; in fact, he did not even give me a chance to complain. He first explained the easy cheap way (multiple key solution) and then he went right in to the solution to fix the issue correctly. The solution, believe it or not, entails having to change out all the locks on the van as well as the ignition switch which would then allow me to still have the two main and one (still unused) valet key.  To do this, I had to wait for him to get clearance from Honda.

I left with the van and will now wait to hear what happens next.

Upcoming Geminid Meteor Shower – Update

Looks like the sky will be clear here tonight for the the Geminid meteor shower. It will be a bit cool though with lows in to the single digits. Kids will not last long outside, but we will try it.

The news is still stating for our neck of the woods, the best viewing time will be at 2 AM however, for those who do not want to stay up that late, go out around 10 PM. Look South and obviously, make sure that you are away from any areas with lights.

The Final Days Before Christmas

I do not know about you, but my wife and I are down to the last few items on the old Christmas list. We have spent time today on EBay watching for the final things we are seeking. I am still amazed at the people that bid up items higher than if they were to go and buy them directly from the store. I think for some, EBay is most likely an addiction similar to being addicted to gambling. Just for fun, I did Google for the words EBay and addiction. There were some interesting search results…

Overall, I have been happy with my online purchases this year and so far, saved some money with everything being delivered on time. I have not hit the point where online purchases have exceeded in-store purchases but I give that a few more years.  More frequently I find myself going to the store, looking at the product and then going home and buying it cheaper online as I am sure many of you do. Moreover, there are still those purchases that I need to make in which I cannot wait for them to be delivered or the shipping charges exceed the cost of purchasing the item locally.

The next tedious task is the wrapping process. My wife mainly handles this process; however, I have been told that I am going to be a better participant this year. I always state, that is fine as long as I get to use duct tape . I do have to make Red Green proud.

Back to editing a video and getting some things ready for work tomorrow.

The Flying Craze

I love to fly. The only dreadful factor about flying for fun is that it is an expensive hobby. To make up for not flying, I acquire every flight simulator that Microsoft releases. The recent one is, “Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, A Century of Flight.” If you like to fly, have a computer and do not have this flight simulator, you need to go out and buy it now.

About a year and half ago I was driving in town and decided to drive out to our local airport. Hey, what can I say, it was one of those days I was looking for something relaxing to do.  Our airport is a small single runway non-controlled airport. I thought maybe I would see someone out working on a plane or maybe I would catch someone doing touch and goes. When I arrived, I noticed a sign across the road from the airport that said, “Quicksilver Ultralights.” I thought to myself, ultralights, why not. I had taken a ride in a two seater about 7 years earlier and liked it. Therefore, I stopped in.

The place ended up being a business that sells Quicksilver Ultralights. Essentially the ultralights are manufactured in California and then are sold by re-sellers as kits. The re-sellers either sell the kits unassembled or sell them assembled for an additional charge. This location also does ultralight flight instruction and is the Iowa statewide dealer for the Quicksilver brand.

Well, now I am stopping in their regularly to catch a glimpse of some of the planes they are working on. I have gone on several ultralight rides with the owner shooting video and even flying the ultralight from time to time.

If you get a chance, look at the site for Ultralight Aircraft of Iowa. There are some videos up there as well showing a Sprint II 2 seater taking off and landing.

During my recent stop, they had just finished assembling a two-seater ultralight with floats! The owner had called me to see if I wanted to see the maiden flight. Take a look at some of the video of that maiden flight.

So now I find myself wondering when and if I will ever buy one. The price for a used single seater is not bad. I guess I will see what the future brings.
